Classical guitars for kids
Find classical guitars for kids in 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 sizes to encourage comfortable posture and easy neck reach during early learning. When choosing, don't focus strictly on age—evaluate height, arm length, and the teacher's recommendation as well. Check out how to choose the right size.
HOW TO CHOOSE A CLASSICAL GUITAR FOR A CHILD?
The main priority is that the child can hold the guitar properly, rest their right arm comfortably, and reach the neck without forcing their posture. A guitar that is too large can hinder basic movements that should develop naturally during early lessons.
1/4, 1/2, OR 3/4 GUITAR?
| Size | What it's like | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 | Very small format | When a 1/2 instrument is still too large and prevents a natural posture |
| 1/2 | Intermediate kids' size | When a compact instrument is needed but the 1/4 format has gotten too small |
| 3/4 | Cadet format | When a 4/4 is still too large but the student needs more body size and room for growth |
These dimensions serve as a reference point, but we wouldn't choose a size based strictly on age. Two children of the same age may need different guitars depending on their height, arm length, hand size, and posture.
ENTRY-LEVEL OR STUDENT KIDS' GUITAR?
First Lessons
If starting out, prioritize proper sizing, playability, and an instrument that allows for easy practice. You can also compare our beginner classical guitars.
Ongoing Study
If the student has been practicing for a while, stepping up build quality and considering models with better materials or a solid top can be worth it.
Teacher or Conservatory
When studying with a teacher, their recommendation regarding instrument size and quality should carry significant weight, especially if used over multiple courses.
WHAT ELSE DO THEY NEED BESIDES THE GUITAR?
For lessons, a gig bag scaled to the guitar's size, a tuner, and any accessories recommended by the teacher are particularly useful. If you need to acquire multiple items at once, check out our classical guitar packs.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CLASSICAL GUITARS FOR KIDS
What classical guitar size does a child need?
It depends on their height, arm length, hand size, and posture. The 1/4 and 1/2 sizes are designed for those requiring scaled-down instruments, whereas 3/4 is a cadet format just below full 4/4 size.
Is it better to choose a guitar based on age or height?
Age can be a general guide, but shouldn't decide on its own. It's far more important that the child can comfortably hold the guitar and reach the neck. If studying with a teacher, consulting their recommended size is also advised.
When should a student switch from a 3/4 to a 4/4 guitar?
When full 4/4 proportions allow the player to maintain a natural posture and easily reach the first fret positions. There is no need to switch strictly because a specific age has been reached.
