The Ampeg PF-20T is a 20-watt all-tube bass head from the Portaflex series, designed to deliver the classic Ampeg character in a compact and manageable format. Its preamp uses two 12AX7 tubes, and the power stage features two 6V6 tubes, providing a warm, dynamic response with progressive saturation when pushed at higher volumes.
In addition to its traditional approach, it includes features especially useful for studio and recording applications, such as a transformer-balanced line output with an XLR connector and the ability to operate without a connected speaker cabinet. Our Opinion
The PF-20T makes perfect sense for those seeking authentic tube Ampeg character without the size and weight of an SVT. Its 20 W allow the power stage to be driven at much more reasonable levels, making it especially suitable for studio, recording, and situations where natural tube saturation is desired.
The ability to operate without a speaker and output a balanced XLR signal also makes it a highly practical tool for recording. It’s not a head designed to compete in volume with a 300 W rig on a large stage but rather for players who prioritize dynamics, texture, and the behavior of a genuine tube stage.
