The Sea Machine is a chorus pedal with extensive modulation options. A variable waveform LFO (adjustable via the Shape control) modulates the chorus sound from a smooth triangle wave to a sharp square wave, and an extended delay line allows for deeper immersion into modulated waters like never before. Other LFO controls include Rate, which sets the LFO speed, and Depth, which determines how strongly the LFO modulates the delay time.
The delay line features controls: Dimension, Animate, and Depth. The Dimension control adds a slightly detuned slapback at low levels, a reverb-like ambient at mid levels, and a resonant echo that leads to self-oscillation when maxed out. The Animate control is the real gem of the Sea Machine, if you will. Animate adjusts how much the frequency oscillates. At lower settings, you'll hear a subtle detuning giving a doubled-tracked effect, similar to traditional chorus pedals. As you increase the Animate control, the frequency oscillates further from the root note, creating an effect that sits between chorus and vibrato, before reaching maximum oscillation reminiscent of a sonar, sounding more like a giant beast awakening from its underwater slumber than any effects pedal we've heard. Finally, the Intensity control rounds out the delay line, blending the modulated and dry signals.
