The Sea Machine is a chorus pedal with extensive modulation capabilities. A variable waveform LFO (adjustable via the Shape control) modulates the chorus sound from a smooth triangular wave to a sharp square wave, and an extended delay line allows you to dive deeper into modulated waters like never before. Other LFO controls include Rate, which sets the LFO speed, and Depth, which determines how strongly the LFO modulates the delay time.
The delay line features Dimension, Animate, and Depth controls. The Dimension control adds a slight detuning slapback at low levels, a reverb-like ambiance at mid settings, and a resonant echo that leads to self-oscillation at maximum. The Animate control is the true gem of the Sea Machine; it adjusts how much the frequency oscillates. At lower settings, you'll hear a subtle detuning effect, creating a doubled-tracked sound similar to traditional chorus pedals. As you increase Animate, the frequency swings further away from the root note, producing a sound that lies between chorus and vibrato, before reaching maximum oscillation reminiscent of a sonar ping — more like a giant creature awakening from its underwater slumber than any effects pedal we've heard before. Finally, the Intensity control balances the mix between the modulated and dry signals, rounding out the delay line.
