Optical compressors are known for their transparency and subtlety. While Blossom can deliver a very aggressive response in more extreme compression settings, its true strength lies in its ability to add a smooth rounding to the tone as the optical circuit works to refine any roughness in the sound.
Blossom is ideal for musicians who typically don’t use compression but want the "mastered" response that optical compression brings to a guitarist’s tone. The compressor’s frequency response is flat as a table and does not boost or cut treble or bass frequencies. This compressor alters the guitar signal’s dynamics to our liking while maintaining the original tone.
Mix Control
When subtle compression is desired, it’s important to have control over the uncompressed guitar signal. The Mix control allows blending the clean signal with the compressed signal, creating parallel compression that adds a natural feel to the sound. The advantage of the Mix control is that you can set a highly aggressive compression setting and then blend in some of the clean signal. This results in a very natural attack as the note sustains and gradually fades, which is common in high compression settings.
EQ Control
The Blossom features a very unique equalization circuit known as a "tilt" EQ. When the EQ control is at 12:00, the tone is completely flat. Turning the EQ control clockwise increases the treble frequencies and decreases the bass frequencies. Conversely, turning it counterclockwise decreases treble and boosts bass frequencies. This type of EQ is very effective when trying to adjust your tone to "cut through the mix". Adjusting the EQ to a brighter setting will make your guitar stand out more in the mix, and the cut in bass will add clarity to your tone.
