Distortion pedals typically offer two clipping options: Soft or Hard. Soft clipping pedals (Soft-Clipping), such as Tube Screamer or Full-Drive 2, use diodes placed in the feedback loop of their operational amplifiers and provide a low to moderate gain overdrive that is cleaner and more compressed. Hard clipping pedals, like RAT or OCD, use diodes connected to ground or — exclusively in the OCD v2 — Mosfet transistors connected between 9V and ground, for a more natural overdrive. The PlimSoul is the only pedal that offers both Soft and Hard clipping modes with specific adjustments for each.
