DiMarzio. Crunch Lab DP228. The name says it all — "crunch," which is the essence of this pickup, delivering a powerful, tight sound that isn't muddy or thin. It has been the foundation of progressive metal tones since the late '80s, used by players like Petrucci. The difference is that now it has been refined.

The name says it all — "crunch," which is what it's all about, with a powerful, hard tone that isn't muddy or thin.
This pickup has been the foundation of progressive metal sounds from the late '80s for players like Petrucci. The difference now is that it has been refined and updated by the master of the "Theater." "Black Clouds & Silver Lining" is a perfect example.
Technical note. The Crunch Lab is known for what it does NOT do. This pickup is NOT lethal. It doesn't have ultra-bass power. Its appearance resembles the D-Sonic, but that's where the similarities end. It is powerful, but much more open in the low and mid frequencies (without so much compression). The high frequencies are much deeper. Designed to work clearly with chords through high-gain amplification.
So complete and unique that Mr. Petrucci has installed it in almost all his guitars...
