Vintage Mode: Classic fuzz, greater expression
With the Vintage mode of the FZ-1W, BOSS has redefined the voice of classic fuzz with more gain and a broader expressive range. The sound has a gritty, energetic character without being harsh, allowing a smooth transition from heavy fuzz to crunch and crystal-clear clean by simply adjusting the guitar's volume. The powerful Tone dial simultaneously adjusts high and low frequencies, enabling you to craft various fuzz tones. When lowering the Fuzz control and raising the Level, the FZ-1W works wonderfully as a boost for your amp and other gain pedals.
Modern Mode: Thick and focused
The Modern mode offers a more refined and versatile fuzz voice, with mid-boost and a deeper bass response, making it ideal for today's diverse styles. The gain range exceeds that of Vintage mode, and pushing the Fuzz control beyond three o'clock yields a rich, singing sustain perfect for expressive solos. The Tone knob provides a different setting that allows you to play with brightness without altering the mid frequencies, ideal for maintaining presence in the mix. When used as a boost, the Modern mode delivers a full-bodied sound with a mid-driven character.
The best of vintage fuzz in a modern pedal
The simple circuitry of highly sought-after vintage fuzz units produces bright, aggressive sounds with long sustain. They are also highly responsive to playing dynamics, and the best designs allow you to clean up the sound by lowering the guitar's volume control. However, these classic pedals are also known for their inconsistency — even among models of the same design — and factors like age, battery type, or temperature can significantly affect their sound and performance.
Thanks to Waza innovation, the FZ-1W lets you enjoy the great musical qualities of vintage fuzz without its drawbacks. While inspired by historic circuits, this pedal features a new approach from BOSS, reinforced by our cutting-edge perspective and deep knowledge of effects design. Using high-quality silicon transistors, we created an exclusive circuit that delivers authentic sound and response, while maintaining stable performance under any temperature or operation condition. Additionally, our modern approach greatly expands sonic possibilities compared to vintage designs, offering more gain, less noise, superior sound shaping, and much more.
The heart of vintage fuzz
When they appeared in the 1960s, fuzz pedals revolutionized the landscape for electric guitarists, offering a new, powerful, and aggressive voice that forever reinvented rock sound. During those early days, innovative pedal builders tweaked and refined fuzz circuits with creative input from many now-legendary guitarists. Ultimately, this led to a small number of standout designs that became benchmarks for most players.
In developing the limited-edition TB-2W Tone Bender, we explored and analyzed many vintage fuzz pedals, gaining deep insight into the subject. This experience inspired us to reinvent the classic fuzz effect with our unique Waza technique and expertise. Unlike previous Waza Craft models, the FZ-1W is not a reproduction of a past design. This pedal is our interpretation of vintage fuzz, and the number “1” in its name reflects our deep respect for the classic circuits that helped shape the sound of rock guitar and launched the effects pedal industry we cherish today.
