Tuning of the Cuban Tres
The instrument has three courses of double strings, octave-tuned in at least one course. Its tuning varies depending on the player and the region of origin. Sometimes it matches the tuning of the first three strings of the guitar (E, B, and G, with the G octave), other times an additional semitone is added to the middle pair of strings, resulting in the tuning E, C, and G (octave), which produces a C major chord open. The tuning of D major (D) is also used, which involves F#, D, and A, with the A string octave-tuned.
