Cuban Tres Tuning
The instrument has three courses of double strings, octave-tuned in at least one course. Its tuning varies depending on the player and the geographic region. Sometimes it matches the tuning of the first three strings of a guitar (E, B, and G, with the G octave), other times a semitone is added to the middle pair, resulting in tuning like E, C, and G (octave), producing a C major triad open. Another common tuning is with a D major triad (D), which is: F# (F-sharp), D, and A, with the A string octave-tuned.
