Tuning of the Cuban Tres
The instrument has three courses of double strings, octave-tuned at least on one course. Its tuning varies depending on the player and the region of origin. Sometimes it matches the tuning of the first three strings of a guitar (mi, si, and sol, with the last one octave), other times a semitone is added to the middle pair, resulting in a tuning of mi, do, and sol (octave), producing a C major chord open. The re major (D) triad tuning is also used, which is: F# (F sharp), D, and A, with the A string octave-tuned.
