The Belle Starr is a signature overdrive pedal by Drew Shirley (from Switchfoot) that embodies the spirit of Rock & Roll.
- Based on the saturation of a small amplifier
- Utilizes MOSFET transistors
- Wide dynamic range
- Operates at 9V
- Consumes 20mA
- Made in the USA
Belle Starr is the result of several months of collaboration with Drew Shirley from the band Switchfoot. Drew has always used ultra-compact, low-voltage amplifiers and has fully saturated them to achieve his signature sound. This pedal is designed to recreate those tones.
To make the saturation sound as natural and amplifier-like as possible, it uses MOSFET transistors instead of traditional silicon diodes. When used in a clipping circuit, MOSFET transistors produce a very smooth saturation similar to that of an amplifier.
Its wide dynamic range allows for a transition from completely clean sound to medium-gain saturation without any abrupt changes.
Control Body
The active EQ control is extremely powerful; the Body control adjusts the bass frequencies, providing a boost/cut of +/-15dB at those frequencies. This control also features a central detent to easily return to a neutral or flat response.
Control Gain
With the Gain control set low and all other controls at noon, it results in a transparent boost that’s hard to distinguish from a clean tone. Increasing this control adds a subtle saturation, moving from clean to a perfect emulation of a small tube amplifier beginning to break up.
Control Tone
The passive tone control is highly expressive; the Tone control adjusts the treble frequencies in a manner very similar to the CUT control on a Vox amplifier. This control also features a central detent to easily return to a neutral or flat response.
